Overview
Tanks 3D is an old multiplayer deathmatch game. Each players controls a tank, and you drive around a small map shooting each other. The goal is simply to get the most kills. There are four different weapons, and power-ups appear randomly on the field.
Review
This game is simple, but it's pretty fun. The graphics aren't that great (but of course this game is over a decade old now), but who doesn't like blowing up stuff in tanks? You use the arrow keys to drive around, and four letter keys to activate the different weapons: cannon, grenades, rockets, and mines.
Setting up for a LAN game is pretty easy, using the in-game GUI. Strangely, you will always have four players--the game fills the extra spots with bots. I did not see a way to turn this feature off.
Unfortunately this game is rather repetitive, with almost no variety. The map is randomly generated terrain, but it will always be a simple square. Each player starts out with the same four weapons. And when you run out of ammo for the good weapons, it will take you a long time to find an ammo pick-up. There are almost no options to configure.
However, despite these shortcomings, Tanks 3D is still a decent game to pass the time with. You and three friends will likely enjoy it for a while, and then move on after 20 minutes or so. It's a good reprieve from the more "intense" LAN games.
Overall, I would say this is an OK game.
